Several weapons: bats, long knives, a pistol are thrown on the ground. The tallest and bearded man, quickly hits a female across the face, knocking her down. And hits another guy with a bat. He gets to ride the bike first and controls the handlebars. As the second guy tries to shoot the woman with a gun she grabs his arm and directs it at the guy on the bike instantly killing him.

George Miller

Writer, director and producer George Miller is the diabolical mind behind the MAD MAX franchise which started in 1979. Although a big hit, it wasn’t until MAD MAX FURY ROAD, where he became the orchestrator in a film that won a total of 6 Oscars: Film Editing (Margaret Sixel), Costume Design (Jenny Beavan), Make Up and Hairstyling (Lesley Vanderwalt, Elka Wardega, Damian Martin), Sound Mixing (Chris Jenkins, Gregg Rudloff, Ben Osmo) and Sound Editing (Mark A. Mangini, David White).

From Doof Wagon to WAR RIG

In this new wasteland, from George Miller’s mind is hyper violent and not just with elaborate chase sequences but vehicles designed for war. Way before FAST AND THE FURIOUS, MAD MAX was tearing up the road. These are vehicles that defy your wildest imagination and logic. My personal favorite is the Doof Wagon in FURY ROAD. Which has a guitarist hanging in front of a mining dump truck with a flamethrowing guitar. Behind him are 30 ft high speakers and behind that are 4 gigantic drums. Director George Miller explained to Conan O’Brien, “In war there’s always music. You need the guitars and drums over the V8 engines. The movie has its own internal logic.”

For FURIOSA, they have the WAR RIG a shiny chrome steel tanker with ball and chains that spin in its back to slice up attackers. The action sequence for the WAR RIG alone took 78 days to shoot.

Anya Taylor Joy

In MAD MAX FURY ROAD, Furiosa was already a famous Imperator (highest rank). Here we discover her beginnings and what she had to do to survive. Anya Taylor Joy now takes over this lead role, from Charlize Theron. Anya has given more than justice to it, showing the evolution from frailty to a fiery avenger. FURIOSA is thrilling, painful with the burning anger and spirit of vengeance.

Charlize Theron was reportedly disappointed unable to play Furiosa again herself, she nevertheless approved of Anya Taylor-Joy taking her place, calling her “one of the greatest f*cking actresses” in an interview.

Anya has won a Golden Globe, Critic’s Choice and SAG award for Queens Gambit in 2021. She has shown the same attention to detail in this role as the past. In spite of not having a driver’s license, has learned to execute a J turn during stunt school. That’s where you floor the gas pedal and use the hand brake to make a 180 degree turn.

She was willing to cut her hair in spite of many modelling contracts and endorsements requiring her to have long hair. But director George Miller insisted she keep her long hair.

To fully tell the story, a lot of credit has to be given to the Young Furiosa (Alyla Browne) and her mother Mary Jabassa played by Charlee Fraser. The experiences portrayed by Alyla Browne and the strength of character of her mother who is also the leader of their tribe is what forms her to adulthood.

Tom Burke as Praetorian Jack also reminded me of a young Mel Gibson. Who was the original Mad Max in 1979 and 1981. Burke may have a more diverse and dramatic set of roles than Mad Mel, who has mostly done action and cop films.

Chris Hemsworth

There has to be that character who brings it all out of Furiosa. That is Dr. Dementus played by Chris Hemsworth. This is a complete turnaround from the roles identified with him. It won’t take long before viewers truly hate him. Since Hemsworth is known for his looks as Thor, god of thunder. How would you make him look even more menacing and evil? I think that’s why Director George Miller thought of adding a prosthetic nose on an otherwise perfect countenance.

Personally, I was a bit taken aback by the Aussie accent (for the role) and wondered if it was his real one. But found out, through his interviews Dr. Dementus is a combination of an auctioneer and his grandfather, more of an Aussie accent from 50 years ago.

Miller described, “He’s a person of many dimensions. Each one took me aback…The shooting process was 6 months and the editing another year. So I got to know of (his) Dr. Dementus in minute detail.” In the same interview with ABC News Australia, Chris shared that George suggested he journal as the character as an exercise. And came up with his own traumatic backstory that formed Dr Dementus. Which allowed him to decide when, where and how to reveal them.

In the presentation of Chris Hemsworth Walk of Fame, George Miller revealed that Chris’ dad Craig Hemsworth was one of the motorcycle riders in the first MAD MAX in 1979. But couldn’t complete the film because he was in University. Which is where Craig met his wife Leonie. “ They ended up becoming social workers who worked with troubled kids. Now, 45 years later I got to work with one of their sons, Chris… I got to know him as a professional working. Worked well beyond my expectations. In the way he brought people together.
