The top boy bands Blue and 98 Degrees’ have arrived at the airport recently for the Greatest Hits Tour. A1 also arrived from Cebu the next day from CEBU. The SMART Araneta Coliseum is expected to be jam-packed. WILBROS Head Winston Llamas said “Even from the airport fans have already come out to welcome these big names. They are already lined up to come out in TV shows like BANDILA and Showtime. Blue will have another interview with the ‘Boy’s Night Out.’ We’ve rolled out the red carpet for these guys. We’re also thankful to all the media partners such as ABS CBN and Magic 89.9 for their support.”

After a quick rest at the official residence in EDSA Shang Rila, it’s a non stop media tour for the bands. Listed below is Blue’s interview with DJs Slick Rick, Tony tony and Sam YG of the Boy’s Night Out. The members of Blue include: Duncan James, Anthony Acosta, Simon Webbe and Lee Ryan.

Welcome Blue!

Duncan James: Flew in from London from Gatwick to Dubai. We’re on a tour at the moment. After we finish here. We’re going to a few other places it’s good to be back man! It’s good to be back in this part of the world hopefully we’ll be coming back again.

Slick Rick: What have you guys been up to?

Lee: The album’s been done. We’ve been in the studio in what feels like about a year now. We went to the States, we went to Miami and went up to L.A.. We met Red One he’s amazing. Literally he’s done half the album. Now we’re ready to rock and roll and release it.

Tony tony: How is the group different now to what it was before?

Duncan: Before there was no YouTube, no myspace, not anything. For us it’s as if we’re a new band. We’re ten years older but we’re coming back out. As the boys have said we’re here in Asia. So many boy bands have come out: JLS, One Direction in the UK. We just wana be a part of that scene. We want to do what we love doing and that’s dancing and singing.

Tony tony: How did you guys get back together?

Lee: We always said we’d get back together for our tenth anniversary. We just did and I guess the rest is history.

Anthony: People didn’t realize it but we wrote “One love” and “Alright”, “Fly by” and most of the big singles that you hear we actually wrote. Again we collaborated for this album writing it together. We’ve written some amazing songs. Our writing abilities are still there. If anything it got stronger. I think that shows in this album

Slick: 10 years ago who’s the craziest person? And who’s the craziest person now?

Simon: Lee or Duncan probably. One’s a fire and one’s a gasoline.

Lee: How are you not crazy?

Simon: Just because I got crazy tats in my arms doesn’t mean.

Anthony: Were going out there and be insane again!

Tony Tony: Are you guys going to stay here longer?

Lee: Hopefully we’ll be coming back doing our own concerts. And doing just Blue, just Blue.

Duncan: We’re just happy to be here.

Tony tony: All of you worked on the album?

Anthony: it’s about getting the sound right.  Its as if we’re a new boy band again. For us we’re a man band now.

Simon: I jus took a Twit pic of you guys. I’m just taking a pic of the Boy’s Night Out here. Check us out on: Official Blue Twitter

Slick: in the music scene  now who do you guys like?

Lee: Adele that album 21 is amazing. It’s a great album. She’s a great artist.

Simon: For me it’s jesse Jane (sings) All about the money money money

Lee: She can really sing.

Duncan: Bruno Mars, another old guys who’ve reinvented themselves is Maroon 5. His voice I think is fantastic. The Christina Aguilera duet they did I think was the best song of 2011.

Avril Lavigne kept an incredible pace over a concert that lasted over 3 hours at the SMART Araneta Coliseum last February 16, 2012. The concert is part of her Black Star Tour locally produced by WILBROS. Winston Llamas Head of WILBROS said, “Avril has a huge fan base here in Manila as you can see with the capacity crowd here in SMART Araneta Coliseum. We’ll be following this up with ‘The Greatest Hits tour’ with A1, Blue and Jeff Timmons of 98 Degrees on Feb. 25 and Olivia Newton John on March 31 also on the same great venue.”

In spite of being just 27 years young the number of hits to her name is such that she could not play all of them in one concert. Thousands of light sticks glowed in the darkness waiting in anticipation of the Canadian sensation. The distinctive piano keys and intro for “Black Star,” played. But the stage was still mostly dark, then the guitars and drums followed. Then the music slowed again, Avril emerged singing slowly waving a plastic star wand. The crowd already had the same wand glowing and waving in the darkness.

After the slow song, 19,000 screaming fans immediately got up from the upbeat second song, “What the Hell.” In between choruses she’d pump up the crowd screaming, “Jump Jump Jump!” Avril had the whole SMART Araneta Coliseum at the palm of her hand. By the time she got to the similarly fast songs “Sk8trboi” and “He Wasn’t” she played a game with the crowd. She’d raise her hands high to the air and say “Put your hands up!” and everyone would raise their hands in unison. Then she’d say, “Put your hands down!” She’ do this in such a fast pace or in order to catch the crowd doing the opposite of what she was saying. She has a natural ease and rapport with her fans.

It’s apparent that she cares more for her fans than the press, refusing interviews from local broadcast networks. Even the charms and persistence of ANC’s Ginger Cornejero didn’t work on the artist labeled as “Anti-Britney.”

The popular local synth pop Somedaydream composed of Rez Toledo was the front act. Green lasers shot out of the sides near Toledo as he sang the modified vocals. As high tech as it seems to the millennial generation, the late Michael Jackson had a very similar looking video for “Rock With You.” He danced as green lasers shot out from behind him circa 1980. The Great Stevie Wonder also modified his vocals as early as the mid 1970’s. The same Stevie Wonder  who also wrote a song complete with music and lyrics within 48 hours for a tribute to Whitney Houston, which he performed at her Home Going ceremony. Toledo has a hit on his hands with “Daydreamer” which was popularized by the Cornetto TVC. He also performed, “Sing this Song” and “Do do with You” all of which are available in his recently released self titled debut album.

According to Wikipedia, “Avril’s debut album “Let Go” made her the youngest female soloist to reach No. 1 in the UK, and the album was certified four-times platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. By 2009, over 18 million copies had been sold worldwide. Her breakthrough single, “Complicated“, peaked at No. 1 in many countries around the world, as did the album Let Go.” She has since made 3 more albums and has gone to number one in in the U.S. Billboards and several other charts.

Five loyal Filipino fans who were at the airport to welcome her, were also front row and center at the concert: Hitori Yuuki, Nilo Jay De Guzman, Ysha Franco, Arden De Torres and Moises Salting. All of them were unanimous in praising Avril for her songwriting. Moises however is also a Nirvana and Guns N’Roses fan he said, “She’s one of the few mainstream pop stars that I listen to and really like. My taste is usually rock, metal. Avril is different because she makes sure that she’s involved in the whole creative process.” Although musically they Avril is different from those bands they have a parallelism in attitudes, “Her similarity with those bands is they really don’t care how other people think of their image.  For them it’s all about the music.”

According to him she is one of the few artists out there with creative credibility and makes music the way that she wants, “Musically she has nothing else to prove. Image wise, I admit there’s a problem regarding her image. She’s very misunderstood.” Although he wouldn’t go so far as to comparing her with GNR bad boy Axl Rose, he believes that they are both honest, “If they’re going to say something they won’t try to be fake.”

Whatever people believe, her connection with fans and love for music is undeniable. She performed a total of 17 songs that night which include: “I Always Get What I want”, “Alice”, “When You’re Gone”, “Wish You Were Here”, “Unwanted, Musical Piece”, “Girlfriend”, “Don’t Tell Me”, “Smile”, “I’m With You”, “Push”, “I Love You” and “Complicated”. She also covered B.O.B’s “Airplanes” singing the portion of Hayley Williams. Avril’s voice showed its more soulful side, an interesting version to the lead vocals of Paramore. The song smoothly segued to her own, “Happy Ending.”

Avril during her concert said, “This is the 2nd to the last city of the Tour. Manila is really special.” She then went on to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia for the last leg of the Black Star tour. She had her troubles there in 2008, from wikipedia: “In mid-August, Malaysia’s Islamic opposition party, the Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party, attempted to ban Lavigne’s show in Kuala Lumpur, judging her stage moves “too sexy”. Her concert on 29 August was considered as promoting wrong values ahead of Malaysia’s independence day on 31 August. On 21 August 2008, MTV reported that the concert had been approved by the Malaysian government.” For this Black star tour she had an easier and more successful time in KL, just for February she came from cities in Japan China and of course it’s more fun in the Philippines.

NOTE: Last chance to catch Mamma Mia Tonight! February 19 is the last night you can get a chance to watch the world-class musical extravaganza!

Written and photographed

By Jude Thaddeus L. Bautista

As much as the critics would like to think they know the world of stage, the people who know the most about Mamma Mia are those who are in it day in and day out. They have the best insights because they’ve had to study the music, lyrics and story almost on a daily basis. These are the comments from the stars themselves.

During the presscon, apart from the insights, the understated British humor was also very much in display. Mamma Mia! is presented by Infinity powered by SMART and Citibank and is brought to you by Lunchbox Theatrical Productions, David Atkins Enterprises, Hi Definition Radio and Concertus Manila.

Richard Standing (Sam Carmichael) in a scene with real life wife Sarah Poyzer (Donna Sheridan) The smash hit musical is running from Jan. 24- Feb 19, 2012. Photo by Jude Bautista

Richard Standing plays Sam Carmichael and is the real life husband of Sarah Poyzer who plays the lead role of Donna Sheridan. For him there’s a whole range of emotions that one goes through watching it, “Songs are there they should feel free to sing along to. Musicals aren’t particularly my thing. I went to see it I found myself laughing. I suddenly found myself crying. Then I found myself jumping up and down. I think they might be surprised how much they do it. I was.”

Lunchbox CEO James Cundall was able to compare this production to others he has seen, “There are a lot of Mamma Mia productions around the world. And this one we’ve been lucky enough to entice here. I’ve seen this show than more countries that I can remember. This company is really interesting. It’s a much fresher show than I’ve seen on Broadway or West End. Between their play they’ve had twelve weeks and from Zurich they had a week off. And they’ve always been to interesting places.

Another plus for Filipinos according to Cundall is being able to see a world class show without having to go out of the country, “And the international performance here is a much much higher quality because the cast and the experience of coming to brand new cultures. The Filipinos will see a much better show than if they got on PAL or Etihad and went to London or New York. That’s what makes me excited.”

Richard also joked about the expected female audiences going for the musical, “We can’t possibly know why that can’t be. I have a lot of respect for women. They know a good show that’s why the come out and watch the show.  There are a lot of young guys who are very fit. It’s NOT them. It’s the experience! They realize it’s a story about women! She has a daughter in love there are best friends.”

Charlotte Wakefield (Sophie) and David Roberts (Sky), at the press preview for Mamma Mia at the CCP main theater. The smash hit musical is running from Jan. 24- Feb 19, 2012. Photo by Jude Bautista

For Kate Graham who plays Tanya, female audiences can relate to the characters, “It’s about strong women as well. I think women like it because there are strong female characters in it. And they’re all different. So everybody can see themselves in Tanya or a bit of themselves in Rosie and of course a bit of themselves in Donna who is a great, great character.”

Richard Standing believes the themes that are in it are universal, “Essentially it’s about love. It works in every different culture. If you’re a parent it’s about parenthood. If you’re younger it’s a young love story. And it’s an old love story if you’re older. It’s about friendship it covers so many bases that speaks to all of us.”

Graham thinks it’s more a matter of redemption that people appreciate, “It’s about people making mistakes and being forgiven for them. And human frailty which I think is nice to watch people get on which turns out to be the greatest thing they’ve ever done in their lives.”

James Cundall  adds that the mesh of the music and story is perfect, “It also uses the best-made songs internationally that you’ve ever heard. It puts them in a context that you wouldn’t have put them before. Which makes it fresh and gives you a story. You sort of know the story that goes along. There’s element s of course, of course yes! You’re almost egging it along because these songs come out. I love this song. I’ve got it. It means something it’s not just a pop song. You make the song exciting it gives them energy. I’ve no energy at all (press laughs)”

Richard says that the enjoyment that they feel performing is important, “The great thing about the show is we have so much fun doing it and it flows to the crowd. It’s just great fun to do that’s why we do it eight times a week in every country. People feed off that.”

One of the funniest scenes is between Jenni Dale (Rosie) and Charles Daish (Bill Austin). The smash hit musical is running from Jan. 24- Feb 19, 2012. Photo by Jude Bautista

Kate believes it’s the team work that element that makes them unique, “It’s because we know each other so well. It’s like we’re an enormous family. It’s cliché that we spend 24/7 with each other. We fight we have a laugh. We party, we have a great time together. And we all know each other really well. THAT helps make this show more special.”

Punk Princess Avril Lavigne lived up to her name not allowing interviews upon landing in the Philippines. The hardest working entertainment reporter in my mind, Ginger Cornejero of ABS CBN and ANC, tried her best to get a blurb from the young rock star but was disappointed. It was the second time she tried to interview her since the first visit to Manila. PUNK as defined by the freedictionary.com: 1. Slang a. A young person, especially a member of a rebellious counterculture group.

That’s Ginger Cornejero of ANC trying to squeeze between bouncers to get a blurb. Avril Lavigne landed in Manila 11:30 PM last night and was whisked off from the airport to EDSA Shang Rila Hotel. Punk is also defined as: b. An inexperienced young man. 1. (Sociology) a.  a youth movement of the late 1970s, characterized by anti-Establishment slogans and outrageous clothes and hairstyles b.  an adherent of punk c.  short for punk rock

ERGO no interviews, but did you know that Ginger joined Miss Philippines Earth in 2006. She placed runner-up as Miss Philippines Air. She is now a regular at ANC Umagang kay Ganda and works as reporter for TV Patrol. She is definitely beauty and brains combined. Nonito ‘Filipino Flash’ Donaire shows the bloody wraps while his trainer takes off his gloves. The Philippine flag flies proudly behind them.

Written by

Jude Thaddeus L. Bautista

A screenwriter could not have thought of a more dramatic script for a film. “Filipino Flash” Nonito Donaire injured his left fist while winning his 4th division title the WBO super Bantamweight belt. Donaire dominated the early rounds and Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. proved to be a more than worthy opponent. It was the reach and superior speed that allowed Nonito to score early. By the third round he staggered Vazquez in the dying seconds with a combination of a left upper cut and a left hook. The ropes saved Vazquez from completely falling to the canvas.

View from the top as Donaire and Vazquez meet in the middle of the ring.

Nonito pushes Vazquez into a corner and staggers him in the 3rd round.

PDI’s Marc Anthony Reyes in his front-page story surmises the fist was broken between the second and fourth rounds. Vazquez started to catch up with accurate jabs and a right cross from round 4-6. And it had begun to turn the tide for Vazquez. An early swelling on the right eye of Donaire seemed to get redder.

Donaire's right eye swelled, in spite of him dominating early in the fight.

Vazquez was also beginning to close the distance landing stronger blows on the inside. Boxing analyst Col. Bob Sheridan noticed that Flash was letting his left hand ‘drop’, or keeping it low too much. This was the opening that allowed the right cross from Vazquez to repeatedly land. Strategically it was a way for Donaire to bait Vazquez to coming in and landing a hard right hook. But because of it Vazquez seemed to be out boxing his opponent until the 8th round.

The Mexican singer who sang their national anthem was Ramon Fernandez. Yes, tukayo of the PBA legend Ramon 'El Presidente' Fernandez.

The incredible thing was that he still used the left to land quite a few heavy blows. And didn’t’ show any real indication that it was hurt. Vazquez was closing in point wise gaining round after round until round 9. Flash came out with a sneaky right hand followed by a left uppercut and left hook which knocked down Vazquez.

The knockdown sequence, the flash winds up an uppercut which lands flush and sends Vazquez tumbling down the canvas.

Ironic that he fell at the SMART logo on the canvas, the only Filipino company to advertise right in the ring. The only other logos were TECATE which is Mexican and Bob Arum’s Top Rank.

Vazquez plants his face on the SMART logo the only Filipino company to advertise right in the ring. Referee Rafael Ramos helps him up and gives him the ten count.

Vazquez is given the standing ten count after the knockdown.

Vazquez, a Puerto Rican, enters the arena waving a Mexican flag.

Vazquez who is Puerto Rican came in the ring of the filled Alamodome carrying a Mexican flag. He is also the son of former 3 Division World champ Wilfredo Vazquez Sr. Carrying the flag was an obvious effort to try and court the support of the predominantly Mexican audience in, San Antonio Texas. And it worked, the crowd cheered every time Nonito was in trouble. Countryman and Fighter of the Decade Pacman Pacquiao has gotten their ire as the “Mexicutioner,” defeating ALL of their recently retired and active hall of fame fighters from Dela Hoya, Barrera, Marquez to name just a few. If they can’t beat Manny, Nonito was the next best target.

The pretty Rachel Donaire at ringside watching her husband overcome pain to win the fight.

Vazquez tries to come back in the dying seconds of the final round with a furious exchange.

After the knockdown, Vazquez could no longer overcome the lead. In the dying seconds of the 12th and final round, the two exchanged punches. Vazquez was trying to catch up trying to knock out and Flash was right there toe to toe giving him everything he’s got. By this time it’s 100% sure that Nonito had ALREADY known that he injured or broken several bones on his left fist. It never fails to amaze me how fighters can go on fighting with incredible pain and injuries WITHIN a fight.  Sometimes their courage is to their own detriment.

Nonito shows 4 fingers for his fourth division title.

In all scorecards with sports analysts Bob Sheridan and Raul ‘El De Monte’ Marquez it was an overwhelming lead 117-110 and 116-110 respectively. And yet one judge Ruben Garcia gave a score of 115-112 for Vazquez. Thankfully the two other official judges saw it differently.

Fighters make up after all is said and done.

Blood oozes out of the wraps after knuckles were broken.

Heroism inside and outside the Ring

Courage can at times be detrimental to a fighter. Such was the case with Karlo Maquinto who died after being in a coma for five days. His death came less than a week from Donaire’s victory and hand injury. He collapsed after coming back from two knockdowns from Mark Joseph Costa. Maquinto got up to win the succeeding rounds enough to convince judges to declare the fight a draw. Seconds after the two fighters hands were raised by the ref he collapsed.

Vazquez tries to laugh after getting dropped.

GMA network aired the footage on primetime news. According to the news telecast Karlo’s sister in Ilo-ilo had not seen him for over two years since he arrived in Manila to train as a boxer. Manila Bulletin sports writer Nick Giongco reported on the incident. His article also had a comprehensive list of Pinoy boxers who lost their lives the past twenty years. Giongco’s article detailed both local and international fights:

“Before Maquinto’s passing, the last Filipino fighter to die of head injuries was Lito Sisnorio, who succumbed in Bangkok in April 2007 after being knocked out by former world champion Chatchai Sasakul. Since the 1980s, there have been a number of ring fatalities involving Filipino boxers here and abroad. In 1982, flyweight prospect Andy Balaba died days after being stopped by Shin Hi Sup in Seoul.

The last twenty years, among the ring-related deaths recorded were those of Macky Silvano, Roger Espinelli, Eugene Barutag, Mateo Baring, Eman Juarez, Ferdie Gimay and Maruel Zayas.”

Boxers risk their lives every time they step up the ring. You realize the heroism of our fighters, knowing the dangers they face. They do it fully conscious of the physical damage that they will suffer, win or lose. It’s reminiscent of our OFWS who go into countries specifically banned by the DFA as danger zones. They’d risk their lives in order to provide a better future for their families.

Our armed forces who put themselves in conflict is also a somewhat similar situation. The difference with our fighters there’s only an army of one, once they climb up the ring. BOTH Pacquiao and Donaire are especially at risk simply because of the level of competition. They face not only the most powerful but also the most skilled boxers in the world. True boxing fans know and appreciate this.

Even when they completely survive their careers, boxers sustain long-term physical damage. Noses are flattened, orbital bones, cheekbones become thicker after receiving hundreds of punches from each fight. Both Freddie Roach and Mohammed Ali suffer from neural disorders but the relation to head injuries has not been established medically. But it doesn’t take a doctor to figure out the damages sustained when the brain is rattled inside the skull after a heavy blow. As detailed in Giongco’s article since the 1980’s, the maximum rounds in a boxing match has been reduced from 15 to 12 in order to reduce the damage sustained in a fight.

Vazquez gets his swelling treated.

Recah Trinidad in an article for boxing.com lambasted organizers of Karlo Maquinto’s fight for being ill prepared when a grave injury is sustained in a fight.  The sport is really dangerous enough. Both Recah Trinidad and another great sports columnist, Quinito Henson have noticed that organizers did not pay enough attention to putting together the proper medical emergency equipment and personnel that may have saved the life of Maquinto. A detailed investigation of what really happened should be made to prevent future deaths in the ring. Another issue that cropped up is the lack of any form of health and life insurance for fighters.

Manny prays each time before each fight not just for his own safety but also for his opponent. No one wants our boxers to be in such dire straits in the same way no one wants our family members to have to leave the country just to earn a living. No soldier should have to lose his life or even take the life of someone else in conflict. But all of these things happen. Are any of these people any less of a hero? Not in my mind.

Donaire is bloodied but unbowed after the fight.

Adam (Bart Guingona) sneaks out and opens his MacBook. Luke (David Bianco) screams from the bedroom, “Are you checking that tumor website again?” Adam is paranoid about having a tumor. His hypochondria stems from his fear of having AIDS in his college days. Luke joins him on the sofa this is when they truly bare their soul to each other, a conversation neither of them will forget.

Perhaps among all of the plays this season, “Next Fall” by Repertory Phil. is a must see for all (adult) audiences. The play won the John Gassner award from the Outer Critics circle for playwright Geoffrey Nauffts. The story deals with the conflicts that gay men have with their Christian faith. Here in the Philippines, it’s something that people don’t necessarily talk about or judge either for or against a side in the religious issue. The play however, only shows how real people cope with their faith.

In these photos Sarah Poyzer (Donna) executes an almost impossible high kick. The outstanding music and vocals are a given from Mamma Mia! the musical. What surprised me the most was the very elaborate dance choreography. Sarah plays the role of Donna the mother, the same as Meryl Streep. The musical definitely has a lot of surprises in store for audiences. Her husband in real life is Richard Standing who plays Sam Carmichael.

There were so many hunks and women in bikinis perhaps the most in any musical. There’s nothing like a live musical performance to move audiences. So far performances have been fully packed. If you have any plans of watching call for reservations or buy tickets now before they run out.

Fans were readily shooting pictures at the CCP lobby with the Mamma Mia streamers and presenters like Infinity by SMART and Citibank. I included a link here to the gallery. Watch out for my full review. The streamers also reveal that Phantom of the Opera will be the next big musical coming to Manila.

According to producer James Cundall, CEO Lunchbox Theater Prod., sponsors played an even more important role in this production, “Because we’ve had to fly in the sets and lighting I literally had to call a jumbo jet and bring them in that way. So thank you to all of them it’s a long list. We couldn’t do what we do we do without them.” He also goes on to say, “We want people to know they are getting the best in the world. But the main thing is we want them to leave with a smile and gladdened hearts.”

That’s Katy Perry touching her big inflatable Pussy named Katy Puuurrrry.

Written and photographed

By Jude Thaddeus Bautista

Before anything else, these pictures are from the 2009 concert. Katy Perry now has an upcoming concert this weekend “The California Dreams Tour”, Jan 22, 2012 at the SM Mall of Asia concert grounds. And yes, the “Katy Perry Rocks for Relief” concert 3 years ago was a lavish, extremely fun, high production show.

Katy holds up her cherry Chapstick.

Katy goes down to the crazed fans.

If Katy herself sees the headline above, she’ll get a kick out of it. She knows the Big Pussy we’re referring to is a huge inflatable cat whom she named ‘Katy Puuurrrry’! And to be perfectly honest I wasn’t a fan of hers before I saw the show but she really is as adorable, sexy and talented as she is famous. She was very articulate and nice during the Press conference at Conways in Makati Shangri La Hotel. These days Ex hubby Russell Brand could not handle Katy becoming far more successful and famous than him. Friends have matched Katy for high profile football star and all around good guy Tim Tebow.

The crowds filled the huge venue. Thousand are expected again for this weekend's concert. Get your tickets now.

If the California Dreams Tour is only half as well produced as the previous one it would still be worth watching. She comes back now with even more hits like Last Friday Night (TGIF), The One That Got Away, Firework and Teenage Dream. I particularly like the lyrics of Firework, which I think, is very inspiring for the youth.

Katy’s hot, hot, hot, fans went wild when she went down to get close to them.

Katy’s hot, hot, hot, fans went wild when she went down to get close to them.

Given the huge production, the importance of sponsors should never be underestimated. If it weren’t for them Katy would not have been able to hold her concert here. Since the “Katy Perry Rocks for Relief” was also a fund raising effort for Ondoy and Pepeng victims, sponsors’ assistance has an even greater meaning. This is the list for the previous concert’s sponsors: “Katy Perry Rocks for Relief” is presented by: Smart Buddy, me na me talaga!; co presented by: McDonald’s, SM Mall of Asia and U92; with the participation of: Selecta;

Official Hotel Residence: Makati Shangri-La Hotel; Special thanks to: 7 Pecados, Armvet Printing Company, Music Management International, Penshoppe, Pioneer Insurance and Polyeast Records – EMI; Official carrier: Philippine Airlines; Offcicial transportation: Ford Global City; Official TV partner: ABS-CBN; Official Media partners: Business Mirror, Business World, Manila Bulletin, Philippine Daily Inquirer and Web.com.ph; Official Radio Partners: RX 93.1, Mellow 94.7, 96.3 WROCK, Yes FM 101.1 and Y101 Cebu

The crowd went wild for Journey’s Arnel Pineda and Neal Schon.

“Katy Perry Rocks for Relief” was ALSO very special because it featured a host of great acts to go along with it. Two of Journey’s members also played that night: Arnel Pineda and guitarist Neal Schon. Vocalist Jed Madela and U.S. band MAE were also there. Arnel came leaping out of the stage, singing with Journey guitarist Neal Schon.

American band MAE who was the front act was so impressed they went out in the audience just to watch Journey as fans. Right after the short set, the audience started chanting, “Journey! Journey! Journey!” An unlikely addition was balladeer Jed Madela but he was able to make use of his operatic voice to belt out rock anthems “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “We will Rock You” by Queen.

The night however still belonged to Katy Perry. Her concert was postponed last October  2009 due to the devastation of typhoon Ondoy. The delay helped organizers add more acts that made the concert even more impressive than the original show. MAE has a local following that was glad to see them for the first time. And all artists mentioned came together to raise funds for the Phil. National Red Cross aiding typhoon victims.

The young and sexy Perry held the audience in the palm of her hand. Thousands of screaming girls were going wilder with each song. Perry came running out to sing her hit “Fingerprintz”. She was dressed in a pink bustier and short tutu that showed her long legs and curves. Her mic stand had a bowl of fruit as its base. Pink flamingos stood guard at each end of the stage.

She didn’t seem to run out of theatrics going into the pit and touching fans using her mock cherry chap stick.  Her songs have bisexual themes not least of which is “You’re so Gay”, “One of the Boys” and “I Kissed A Girl”. The latter is her biggest hit. Most of her songs also deal with young romance, “Thinking of You”, “Hot N Cold”, “Use Your Love” and even materialism “Afford Me”. All of them are fast paced danceable tunes that have captured the teeny bopper crowd. A huge inflatable cat called “Katy Purry” came to life by the encore.

George Valentin (Jean Dujardin) and Peppy Miller (Berenice Bejo) They change each other’s lives in “The Artist” winner of Golden Globes Best Picture-Comedy or Musical and Best Actor-Jean Dujardin. “The Artist” had an Asian premiere at the 1st Rendezvous with French Cinema held last December at Singapore near the Marina Bay Sands.

Peppy (Berenice Bejo) knocks on the door to George’s (Jean Dujardin) dressing room when no one answers she lets herself in. To the corner of the room she sees his coat and is drawn to it. Her hands fall on the material and her arms hug the garment as if it was George. She slips her right hand into a sleeve and hugs herself pretending that he was holding her and talks to the coat. George gets to the doorway and sees Peppy, but he watches quietly, wanting to know and hear what else Peppy has to say. Their love affair is central to a touching film that captures a long lost era of movies.

Peppy Miller (Berenice Bejo) pretends the coat is George. “The Artist” had an Asian premiere at the 1st Rendezvous with French Cinema held last December at Singapore near the Marina Bay Sands.

The Artist by French director Michel Hazanavicius reaped Best Motion Picture (comedy or musical) and Best Actor (Jean Dujardin) at the Golden Globes. The film debuted in Asia recently as the opening film of 1st Rendezvous with French Cinema held in Singapore.  The film is homage to old Hollywood glamour that originated in the silent era. And the story is set at the cusp when the cinematic world was transitioning to sound. It makes a modern day audience fall in love with old style movie making. In that way it not only honors that period but also reminds us of why film affects us so deeply.

“The Artist” by French director Michel Hazanavicius reaped Best Motion Picture (comedy or musical), Best Actor (Jean Dujardin) and Best Original Score (Ludovic Bource) at the Golden Globes. “The Artist” debuted in Asia recently as the opening film of 1st Rendezvous with French Cinema held in Singapore near the Marina Bay sands.

It seems trivial now but the change was truly revolutionary. And the directorial treatment reflected this. The film was not only in black and white but also had inter titles. These are the texts in between cuts that used to express dialogue. The technique makes good use of silence to emphasize what the characters are going through. When sound does come in it becomes a magical experience. And duplicates how people used to silent films must have felt the first time they heard sound with their movie.

Jean Dujardin won a Best Actor in (Motion Picture-Comedy or musical) for his role as George Valentin. “The Artist” had an Asian premiere at the 1st Rendezvous with French Cinema held last December at Singapore near the Marina Bay Sands.

George Valentin played by Jean Dujardin was already a huge star of the silent era. The character may have also been loosely based on the real silent era star Rudolph Valentino who had an Italian father and a French mother. Dujardin on the other hand has the same beaming smile, dark hair and facial structure of Hollywood icon Gene Kelly. The resemblance is unmistakable in this film as there are quite a few tap dance routines, which made Kelly famous. This may be the only title for Dujardin for him to learn and perform those moves and that makes it even more impressive. He was able to show a natural ease that comes with years of dancing.

Peppy Miller gives a hi tech radio interview. James Cromwell is the faithful and kind driver Clifton on the left hand corner of this photo. “The Artist” had an Asian premiere at the 1st Rendezvous with French Cinema held last December at Singapore near the Marina Bay Sands.

Peppy Miller played by Berenice Bejo is a shortened version of another cast member’s name: Penelope Ann Miller. The name sounds very much like her character, a young, bright, attractive and kindhearted actress. She also represents the new wave of talent from talkies that overwhelm the stars of the silent era. In real life Bejo is the wife of director Michel Hazanavicius both of them were in Manila in 2008. They were in town to promote their film OSS 117 which also had Jean Dujardin as the quirky and ambiguously gay spy.

John Goodman played producer Al Zimmer. “The Artist” had an Asian premiere at the 1st Rendezvous with French Cinema held last December at Singapore near the Marina Bay Sands.

Since the film is set in Hollywood, other cast members were composed of skillful actors.  A thinner, older John Goodman is the larger than life producer Al Zimmer. James Cromwell is the faithful driver Clifton. Penelope Ann Miller is the distant wife Doris. One of the arguments that George is based on Rudolph Valentino is his relationship with Doris. Valentino had also been in a loveless marriage with Jean Acker whom he did not know was a lesbian. In The Artist however, it was more just a mutual indifference that was established. Keep a sharp eye out for the minor roles as they have quite a few noted actors. Malcolm MacDowell was the butler and “Dharma and Greg” star Joel Murray was a clumsy cop.

John Goodman played producer Al Zimmer. “The Artist” had an Asian premiere at the 1st Rendezvous with French Cinema held last December at Singapore near the Marina Bay Sands.

The film also touches into the Great Depression in the 1930s and how it affected the industry. George Valentin is the artist who never wanted to compromise his view of movies. Valentino had the same struggles; he wanted creative control over a higher paycheck. The Artist was able to put together a great story creatively and tell it in a touching way. We learn that there are things more important than either art or movies. No matter how tragic life gets, love conquers all.

Distinguished actors were cast in minor roles like Malcolm Macdowell, who was the butler. “The Artist” had an Asian premiere at the 1st Rendezvous with French Cinema held last December at Singapore near the Marina Bay Sands.
